Peter Brindley photography

That doesn't immediately suggest a way of classifying my portfolio for this web-site, if only because I suspect that many do not recognise the true nature of what it is they aspire to - what we think we want may all too often be a way of hiding from what we are really searching for. And in any event, what my photographs mean to you may be quite different from what they mean to me.

To achieve some objective neutrality, I have grouped my work under four headings, primarily related to the environment in which each photograph was taken - so my urban photographs were all taken in towns; they are not necessarily to be seen as my comment on the urban way of life or whatever.

Nevertheless, even this classification can sometimes be just as meaningless as any other - how, for example, to group photographs in my own garden which is in the middle of a town? The trees on my home page may look as if they belong in the country, but they were in fact taken by a children's playground in a town in the industrial north of Italy.

Perhaps all this boils down to nothing more than the uncomfortable fact of life that all too often things are not quite what they seem.

New York, February 11, 2003; file 554/7

My current main photographic concern is to record my own private perceptions of the aspirations of today’s world.
